Toxicology of di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate and other phthalic acid ester plasticizers.

چکیده
The first poly(vinyl chloride) blood bag containing di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) as a plasticizer was introduced in medicine in 1950. Since then, millions of liters of blood collected in plastic have been transfused. Aside from the obvious advantages of plastic over glass containers for the collection, storage and transfusion of blood, plastic containers have made blood component therapy possible; at least six different blood fractions can now be separated aseptically from whole blood and administered individually to the patient as needed. Poly(vinyl chloride) plastics containing DEHP also have been employed in a variety of other biomedical devices, including transfusion and infusion assemblies, administration sets, artificial kidney connecting tubing, bubble-type oxygenators, catheters, enema and urinary drainage bags, etc. Plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) plastics were selected for these medical applications principally because of their unique physical properties, ease of fabrication, low cost, and apparent safety. To provide the necessary flexibility, relatively high levels of plasticizer (up to 40%) must be blended into the plastic formulation. Recent reports have identified milligram-% quantities of DEHP in blood or plasma

Esters of phthalic acid are extensively used as industrial solvents and plasticizers in the manufacture of a wide variety of plastics, including food-packaging materials. When administered orally to the rat, the metabolites in urine of a number of phthalate diesters appear as derivatives of the corresponding monoesters (Albro et al. 1973; Albro & Moore, 1974). Further, the most commonly used ph...
متن کاملToxicology of phthalic acid esters used in food-packaging material.
Phthalic acid esters may be used as plasticizers in food-packaging materials that have direct contact with food. Under normal conditions of use small amounts of the plasticizers would be expected to migrate into the food. The safe use of the phthalic acid esters under these conditions is based on available toxicity data, as well as regulations which, in general, specify the maximum extractable ...
متن کاملAnalysis of potentially toxic phthalate plasticizers used in toy manufacturing.
A plasticizer is a substance normally incorporated to a PVC resin or some other materials such as paints, to improve some of its properties as flexibility or processability. Phthalates, adipates, phosphates and some others are the main compounds used as plasticizers. Some of these compounds, as bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DOP), are being questioned worldwide because of their potential toxicit...
متن کاملCarcinogenicity testing of phthalate esters and related compounds by the National Toxicology Program and the National Cancer Institute.
Five phthalate ester and related compounds (phthalic anhydride, phthalamide, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, di(2-ethylhexyl) adipate and butyl benzyl phthalate) have been tested for carcinogenic effects in standard lifetime rodent feeding studies. Groups of 50 male and female rats and mice were fed diets containing various concentrations of the test chemicals for 102-106 consecutive weeks. The die...
